Beware of Roofing Contractor Storm Chasers

Storm chasing home contractors are a prevalent problem throughout the country of the select few who take advantage of the abundance of work after natural weather disasters and leave the homeowner with a bigger and costlier mess on their hands.

Naturally most home owners are desperate to find a contractor to make necessary damage repairs. Outwardly displaying your dismay can leave you and your home to being preyed upon by a drifter. Out state vehicle license plates, contingency agreements and little to no references or reviews of previous roofing projects completed are signs that something is awry.

Of course not all roofing contractor storm chasers are bad. Many roofing contractors genuinely want to help out local communities in times of an emergency, but scammers are more prevalent during this time. Just remember to be as calm and focused as you would during any other time and stay informed.

Post-storm Roof Check

There are simple post-storm roof checks that you can do that are easy and safe. Getting on a ladder or on your roof can be dangerous and is better left to your roofing contractor. The following can be done at ground level.

Check the Top of Your Roof

Standing at the end of your driveway or across the street in most circumstances will allow you to see on top of your roof. Be sure to check if there are tree branches or other debris on it. If so, these need to be removed as soon as possible before they cause damage.

Check Your Gutters

Is water coming out from the spout at an even flow or does it seem slowed? After a storm debris fall into your gutters, including sticks and branches and should be removed as soon as possible.

In addition, an excessive amount of granules or dirt in the gutters or spouts in any section, this is a sign of shingle damage and should be looked at immediately before a small problem becomes a bigger one.

Roof Inspections

Having a roofing contractor inspect you roof regularly will help catch roofing problems early. Even the best of roofs become damaged during heavy storms and unforeseen weather events. Not all roofing damage can be seen by an untrained eye, and may not show warning signs until it is too late.

Catch small roofing problems before they become large ones for lower roofing repair costs and a longer life for your roof!

How To Choose A Roofing Contractor

Choosing a roofing contractor to work on your home is a big choice to make. There are many roofing contractors out there, and many roofing options to chose from.

While in the process of choosing a roofing contractor, you’ll want to pay close attention to these points below:

  • Verify that the roofing contractor is licensed for your area & is a legitimate business.
  • Ask for proof of insurance including worker’s compensation and liability.
  • Read reviews, ask for references to ensure satisfaction of their past clients.
  • Inquire who will be working on your roof, when and for how long.
  • Obtain a contract and detailed estimate of the roofing project.
  • Do research! Look at multiple roofing contractors. The lowest bid is not always the best choice, there could be higher quality & value for a slightly higher price.

Importance of A Gutter Cleaning

Gutters are responsible for disposing of rain water from your home in a safe way that does not damage your home. Without gutters, your residential roof would not last as long and would cost more money in roofing repairs and new roofs more frequently.

Cleaning these your gutters, ensure the structural integrity of your roof. Gutters are prone to blockages from tree debris and dirt. Removing debris before they cause a blockage is key. Without anywhere for the rain water to go, it will sit and soak into the walls of your home causing avoidable structural weakness, leaking water and interior home damage.

At Rock Roofing, we do not advise climbing on your roof without the proper safety precautions. Call us today to schedule an appointment!
